As part of our ‘The Future of Yesterday’ theme for EMC 2018, we’re bringing you curated playlists paying homage to some of the golden years in electronic and dance music from the last 4 decades – 1978; 1988; 1998; 2008 and 2018.

Bringing us back to the present day is Australia-based DJ, MTV Presenter + Self Development/Beauty Youtuber Flexmami. Find out what these tracks mean to her plus read some of her favourite moments from this year.

  1. Tell us about the playlist, why do these tracks stand out for you?
2018 has been the year of cross genre listening for me. I’m way less bound by the ideas of what’s sonically “cool” or “trending” and completely drawn to music that makes me feel. All the songs I’ve picked are ones that incite a reaction – from hype to wistful, nostalgic to surprised – it’s a direct reflection of my energy.
2. Could you share with us one of your most memorable electronic music experiences from this year?

Definitely experiencing Snakehips sets during the Listen Out tour. They’ve mastered the art of infectious pop music with heart and soul — it blows my mind. Their sound is nostalgic yet progressive and always incites happiness in me. Big fan.

3. What do you think electronic music culture and/or business in 2018 could learn from past decades
Making music for the sake of a legacy not just business. There’s a need to produce hits for now, to hit a target, get played on a certain station — but it would be awesome to see if/how someone’s output would change if they were creating for a timeless brief.

You can also catch Flexmami speaking at this years EMC. Tickets available here.
