todayAugust 15, 2018 22

We’re excited to announce the first of what is our most incredible lineup of speakers in EMC’s history in an unimssable 2018 program.

SASHA

EMC’s first guest announcement is one of the most prolific electronic music artists of all time, SASHA. Grammy Award nominee, four-time International Dance Music Award winner, four time DJ Mag award winner, and now acclaimed live artist, SASHA is a man who needs no introduction. His already prosperous career is burgeoning at an ever-increasing rate. From his record sell-out REFRACTED live show, to mixing fabric 99, tracks released on Kompakt and Watergate, the superb Scene Delete compilation (Late Night Tales), world tours and sold out label showcases, Sasha continues to be a global phenomenon; the ultimate timeless artist, still enlisting new fans and appealing to the next generation. Since 2011, he’s carved a new way with his pivotal Last Night On Earth imprint. Currently in its seventh year, Last Night On Earth has succeeded in being a key platform for inspiring and fresh talent, including BAILE, Theo Kottis, Maribou State and VONDA7. Needless to say, EMC is beyond excited to welcome Sasha to EMC for an intimate In Conversation with SASHA in the 2018 Keynote Theatre.

GILLES PETERSON

Also appearing in the Keynote Theatre is the one and only Gilles Peterson. Best known as a radio presenter on Saturday afternoons on BBC 6Music and as an international club tastemaker, Gilles Peterson is also an avid record collector, a curator, a music producer and record label boss. Every year he puts on two large events – the Worldwide Awards in London which is his annual showcase of that years best music and the Worldwide Festival which has expanded to two editions – one in south of France in July and one in Switzerland in March. He also presents a syndicated weekly radio show that is broadcast all over the globe, from Shanghai and Sydney to France and Germany and has recently set up his own online digital radio station, Worldwide FM, broadcasting from its London HQ and from studios around the world. EMC is proud to welcome Gilles back to Australia for his first appearance here since 2015.

GREG WILSON

Joining Gilles in the Keynote Theatre is another one of the most important figures on the UK dance scene, Greg Wilson. A DJ since 1975, Greg was a pioneer of mixing in the UK, becoming the first ‘dance music’ specialist hired in 1983 for a weekly session at Manchester’s legendary Haçienda club; was the first DJ to mix live on British TV and showing a certain Norman Cook (later Fatboy Slim) how to scratch. In 2009, Greg’s Essential Mix on BBC Radio 1 was selected as one of 10 classics that spanned the shows near 17-year history. He has produced multiple documentary podcasts; has given talks on music and DJ culture at The Tate Gallery in Liverpool and London’s Institute of Contemporary Arts; has curated stages at numerous leading UK and European festivals and in 2015 was presented with DJ Magazine’s Industry Icon award. In 2018, Greg released Volume 3 of his internationally acclaimed Credit To The Edit.

These two British legends team up in the Keynote Theatre for a very special In Conversation: The Psychology of DJing with Gilles Peterson and Greg Wilson.

BLOND:ISH

From early beginnings promoting a midweek Montreal club night, BLOND:ISH (Viv and Anstascia ) have been trailblazing the globe since 2015. Their debut LP released on Kompakt Records in 2015 was an intoxicating soundscape unlike any other, fusing electronic music with field recordings, traditional instrumentation and polyglot vocals with absolute mastery. Tribal influences are in abundance in their music, a natural result of their spiritual encounters around the globe not to mention the fact that BLOND:ISH is a permanent fixture at Robot Heart at Burning Man. “A lot of people have never heard of us and some people don’t take us seriously,” Anstascia says. “We’re doing our best to show that our music speaks for itself.” Whether through their acclaimed originals or their epic remixes such as the BLOND:ISH remix of Depeche Mode’s ‘Should Be Higher’ which has clocked up almost 5 million streams on YouTube alone, it’s safe to say that their music is doing just that. The 2018 European summer has seen BLOND:ISH continue their trajectory touring across a whopping 37 shows on their #SUMMEROF:ISH tour. They appear as guest speakers at EMC 2018 for the first time.

JOHN WATSON

Also featuring in EMC’s Keynote Theatre is legendary Australian manager John Watson for an In Conversation led by Association of Artist Manager’s Leanne de Souza. Widely considered as the most inspirational keynote speaker in Australia, John’s gems of wisdom come from an incredible music and management career spanning over three decades. From early beginnings playing in Indie bands his journey has encompassed a stint in music journalism; working in Sony’s A&R department where his signings included The Prodigy and Silverchair, the latter whom he went on to manage through their illustrious career. Forming Eleven: a music company, John has managed several of Australia’s most successful artists across a myriad of genres including The Presets, Gotye, Wolfmother, Paul Mac, Missy Higgins, Birds of Tokyo, Midnight Oil and Jimmy Barnes. Many artist managers in Australia today reference John’s insights, inspirations and wisdom as a reference point throughout their careers – for managers and artists of all levels, this is a keynote not to be missed.

With 25 years’ experience working in artist management and events she has represented various high profile, award winning, commercially successful and critically acclaimed contemporary musicians. CHARLOTTE LUCY CIJFFERS
